Dr. Neil S. Patel is a vitreoretinal and anterior segment surgery specialist in New York City. He is the Director of Retina Services and President of New York Ophthalmology, a clinical assistant professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and an adjunt professor at SUNY Optometry. He is an attending physician at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, Mt. Sinai Hospital, Montefiore Medical Center, and St. Barnabas Hospital (Bronx, NY). Dr. Patel has taken care of thousands of patients from New York and specializes in both complex retinal detachment and complex anterior segment surgeries.
Dr. Patel began his academic career at Columbia University, earning a B.S. in Applied Mathematics and an M.S. in Applied Physics. Following this, he obtained his medical degree at SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn. He completed a one-year internship in general surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, followed by a residency in Ophthalmology at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary – the nation’s oldest and busiest eye hospital and a premier institution for ophthalmology training in the tri-state area.
A subsequent two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery was completed at the University of California at Irvine, under the supervision of Dr. Baruch Kuppermann. In addition to taking part in numerous clinical trials, he performed numerous surgeries in some of the most complex cases in the region for diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, ocular trauma, and many other retinal disorders.
Dr. Patel is board-certified and a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a Fellow of the American Society of Retina Specialists. He has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and has experience lecturing nationally and internationally.
Most important to Dr. Patel is providing the most advanced ophthalmic care to his patients in the most relaxed environment possible. He enjoys taking his time listening to his patients and caring for each patient as if they were his own family and friends.
